Hotel Hubertus Cherry-Wood RFID Key Card

Hotel Hubertus is a five-star alpine wellness hotel above Olang in South Tyrol, known for its dramatic cantilevered Sky Pool and close connection to the Dolomites. For this distinctive mountain property, PrintPlast produced a custom square RFID hotel key card in cherry wood: compact, tactile and deliberately quieter than a conventional printed plastic card.

The finished key measures 55 × 55 mm and is approximately 1.9 mm thin. A single geometric deer mark is laser engraved into the face, allowing the natural cherry grain to remain the dominant visual element. It is a practical example of how wooden hotel key cards for ski resorts can feel specific to the property while remaining functional room credentials.

A Wooden Hotel Key Card Designed for Its Setting

At Hotel Hubertus, timber, stone, glass and mountain views are not decorative add-ons; they form the visual language of the property. Cherry wood was chosen for the room key because its warm, fine grain sits naturally within that material palette. It feels appropriate at a timber reception desk, in a guest’s hand and alongside the architecture of an alpine hotel.

This is where material selection matters. A dark walnut card can create a formal, dramatic impression. Pale bamboo can feel light and contemporary. Cherry occupies a useful middle ground: warm without being heavy, refined without appearing overly polished. For an alpine wellness resort, that balance makes the credential feel connected to the stay.

Why a 55 mm Square RFID Key?

The square format gives Hotel Hubertus an immediately recognisable object without making it oversized or impractical. At 55 mm on each side, it remains easy to carry in a wallet, pocket or ski-jacket compartment while clearly departing from the standard bank-card silhouette.

The proportions also give the central deer engraving enough breathing room. There is no decorative border, crowded wording or simulated wood pattern. Real grain and one precise mark do the work. The restraint is intentional: a premium hotel key card does not need to look busy to feel specific to the property.

RFID Performance Behind the Natural Surface

The cherry-wood face is only one part of the product. Inside the card, the RFID inlay is selected around the property’s approved lock-system requirements. PrintPlast manufactures and personalises the physical credential; it does not replace the hotel’s lock platform, property-management system or access-control software.

For a new wooden hotel key card programme, we map the intended use, work from approved system information and create production-representative samples. Those samples are then validated on the actual property before the bulk run. This step matters because a beautiful room key still has to encode, read and open the correct door reliably.

Laser Engraving That Respects the Wood

Laser engraving creates the Hotel Hubertus deer mark by working directly into the surface rather than covering it with a printed graphic. Depth, heat and contrast must be controlled so the symbol stays crisp without scorching the surrounding cherry grain.

Natural wood varies from card to card. That variation is part of the appeal, but production still requires disciplined tolerances: consistent dimensions, smooth rounded corners, controlled card thickness and repeatable engraving placement. The finished set should feel related, not artificially identical.

Hotels near ski areas often manage more than bedroom access. Depending on the property, the guest journey can include ski-lift credentials, equipment storage, spa access, lockers, parking or cashless purchases. These touchpoints may use different systems and should not be treated as interchangeable.
